How can I spot trustworthy model scouts?

What is a model scout?

Model scouts find new talent to launch onto the scene as the next top model. For young or aspiring models, it’s important to be able to tell different between the trustworthy and the unreliable.

Where do they look?

Modelling scouts usually laze around places that attract young people. Experts are hired from modelling agencies to scan the crowd in hopes of finding talent! Popular places for this are festivals, shopping malls and even fast food chains, as thats where teenagers and young adults gravitate towards. In most cases the talent aren’t aware of their potential and are caught off guard when approached while shopping or having lunch.

Instagram scouts

Model scouts are not just on the street but also online. It’s the digital age and scouts have turned to social media. Instagram is a huge platform for agencies as it’s very visual and some agents don’t have to leave their office!
They are a lot of scams out there, so be careful when replying to messages and comments. Always check if the company or individual contacting you is legitimate before a meeting. For example, if someone is claiming to work for a major agency, a call to their office will determine if it’s genuine.  On a more positive note, social media is a great outlet for aspiring models and theres a wide range of hashtags that can be used to ensure agents click on your profile.

How to know if an opportunity is legitimate

When being approached by a model scout always check your surroundings, whether if it’s at a festival or your favourite high street shop like Topshop or Zara. Having your wits about you will help you to assess if the situation is genuine. Ask the scout for a business card with an address, phone number and email clearly printed because a reputable scout will carry these.
Once home, do a quick background check to see if their facts are correct. This shouldn’t take long and be relatively easy as all modelling agencies have websites. Always call the number to make sure it rings and to ask any questions. If at any time a scout asks for money upfront or to leave with them, politely decline and get back to them. Teenagers under the age of 18, should always check in with their parents before making decisions.

What are modelling scouts looking for?

Theres no exact formula, however scouts are usually looking for certain characteristics. Healthy skin, physique and ages between 14-21 are the main features sought after. An unusual face with a charming personality will be held in high regards. And, of course a great bone structure and being photogenic will get you the winning ticket.

How to impress

The young individuals who are scouted are usually going about their daily life as normal. They aren’t worried about make up or looking stylish. Scotts are looking to see real raw talent. Therefore, to impress, all it might take is a walk to McDonalds.
Kate Moss was found at an airport on her family trip to Florida. Jourdan Dunn was shopping in Primark when she was scouted. The opportunity could come to anyone, at any time. Fashion works globally around the clock in cities such as London, Paris and New York. It’s important to still actively work everyday towards becoming a model, and if lucky enough to be spotted then it’s a huge bonus!

How to be discovered by an agency

The opportunity will not come to those who wait. So it’s vital to harness every positive day and take steps towards the end goal. Submit online applications to various modelling agencies. This is a effective way of getting notices by modelling scouts. Make sure to check if the agencies will be hosting open calls to meet potential models.

Model Scouts

After being scouted, the next steps is to usually attend a meeting with the agency. The meeting will be about how the business works, a plan will be put in motion for the next steps, including availability for the remaining year. At this point, a photoshoot will be set up by the agency to create a portfolio for the model to begin their career!

It’s an amazing and excited time in anyones modelling career but there will be a lot of hard work to do. A reputable agency will provide all the necessary training for their models to succeed. Always remember to be confident, friendly and full of good energy when starting out and learn from every experience. Start conversations and don’t be boring! There is a lot more to models than just good hair! Finally, don’t be afraid to show your personality. Model scouts love individuals who are out going and ready to be creative!
